Bilquis private School had the pleasure and honor of welcoming Dr. Moatasem Majed Al-Sairi, one of its distinguished graduates, in recognition of a remarkable scientific achievement he accomplished at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Ibb University.

This special reception was held in appreciation of his outstanding efforts and distinguished academic achievements. His accomplishment reflects the depth of scientific knowledge and research precision demonstrated by students of the Faculty of Medicine in identifying and correcting a specific scientific error in the ninth edition of the renowned international medical reference, Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics.
The Scientific Achievement
The achievement involved identifying and correcting an error in Chapter 52, Table 52.1, page 209.
The condition concerned: Glycogen Storage Disease Type I (Von Gierke Disease / GSD Type Ia).
The incorrect information in the reference: Ketosis was listed as an associated feature of the disease.
Dr. Al-Sairi presented an in-depth physiological explanation, supported by reliable medical evidence, demonstrating that patients with this condition have a defect that inhibits ketogenesis. As a result, ketosis is absent or markedly reduced compared with other types of glycogen storage disease.
Official Response from the International Publisher Elsevier
Following a carefully documented scientific correspondence and persistent follow-up, Dr. Al-Sairi received an official and final response from Marybeth Thiel, Executive Academic Editor at the international publishing house Elsevier. The response stated:
“We have revised this wording from ‘ketosis’ to ‘ketosis is absent or blunted’ in the 10th edition.”
This revision, which will be read by millions of physicians and medical students around the world in the forthcoming tenth edition of Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics, is a source of pride for Ibb University and all members of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It demonstrates to the world that the excellence of Ibb University’s students extends beyond acquiring knowledge to actively contributing to its refinement and advancement through sound scientific reasoning.
